Introduction to round table at 17th ICSID Congress
Though many of you know each other or you have already started good conversation, it might be good idea to say who is here and what will do. First, we have our visitors from abroad, of whom many came from countries far away, and our little town Kamnik, might seem to you at the end of the world. Then we have our local leaders, people who are important for Kamnik and it's business. The factories which are present today are Stol (furniture production or interior image design), Ideja (textile for interior and exterior), Svilanit (production of beautiful things from textile) and Titan (strong and safe products), and they have exhibited some of their best design for us. But let not forget the third group in this hall, these are people who will become important for Kamnik, and they will lead this city into new century. It is especially them, who will bring and need new ideas.

My name is Janez Damjan, assistant for marketing at University of Ljubljana. Working in marketing means meeting with different problems of industry, design, and of course people. This is my job also today; bringing together questions and answers from different people, who came from different fields, and have different backgrounds.

Design is certainly the key word for our today meeting, but this does not mean our topic will be narrow. We all know by now and we shall learn again, that design means development, and this is our common goal. Talking about development also means talking about marketing, about production, about education, about research. So, whatever our profession might be, we are colleagues on the question of development. Mr. Lord will talk more about these matters in his short lecture in a minute.

In my introduction I want to say a few more things. First, we are very happy to be here together. As a member of organizing team in Kamnik, I may say, we feel today as being at the end of the long journey, on which we prepared for this meeting. During last months we had some fears, how can we make Kamnik and its people interesting for world designers, and how can we profit from their visit. Today will get the final answer, but in my opinion we have already gained a lot from the preparation phase. In our search for the space in the world, we got to know ourselves better, we know more about our problems.

We have to learn, that our problems are nothing really special. We are the only Slovenians, and this is the only Kamnik in the world, but by listening to others will learn we are on the same boat. That should give us new strength and especially some optimism, which is so important for creativity; and creativity is the tool for better design and for faster development.

Questions:
1. Many our managers believe on the basis of their experiences, that even with better design their (or our Slovenian) products could not be sold for higher prices on foreign markets. This question probably also regards the importance of country of origin for the value of design.
Comments and examples, that could bring us to some answer are welcome !

2. Slovenia has a lot of old interesting household products, which became useless with introduction of electricity (nutcrackers, coffee grinders, etc.). Could they become interesting products for any segment ?

3. What is the role of management in directing new product development ?

4. What means of communication among designers in different fields can be used ?

5. Should designer follow or shape the taste of consumers?

6. What is actually good design ? How important is the time dimension for this question ?
